In a just over a week, from the 30th of January, Passerelles numériques Cambodia will inaugurate the selection process that every year covers a period of 6 to 8 months. Its objective: choosing the students who will be enrolled in PNC’s school in October 2012.

Phnom Penh, 26-30 December. As the first quarter of the year draws to a close the 100 1st year students of Passerelles numériques will soon choose which curriculum they will undertake for the rest of their studies. They need to choose between SNA (Systems and Network Administrator) and WEP (Web Programming). To help them with this difficult choice, PN Cambodia organized an Orientation Week. This is series of workshops during which trainers from both SNA and WEP explain to students, through practical exercises and demonstrations, the training they will received in each program and the different career opportunities they will have at the end of their studies.

At Passerelles numériques’ school in Cambodia, Wednesdays afternoons are dedicated to leisure time. Some of students go to the Olympic stadium to play soccer or volleyball. Others prefer to do aerobics on the school’s terrace, following the rhythm of upbeat music. There is also a small group of students who prefer the arts to sport and who have decided to take some drawing and painting classes. Their teacher, Beatrice, has a very long and interesting experience as a painter. Every Wednesday she donates some of her spare time to the students who have a special talent for drawing and a passion for art and helps them to develop their creative abilities.

In October at the beginning of the new school year, Passerelles numériques Cambodia welcomed 125 students. 100 of them will follow our 2-year training programs (Systems and Network Administrator and Web Programming) and the remaining 25 students will be trained for 6 months to become Data Manager Operators. As the students come from Cambodia’s remote provinces they have often not received adequate health care before arriving at Passerelles numériques. This is why taking care of their physical condition and guaranteeing their wellbeing is one of Passerelles numériques top priorities.

30th of August 2011. Komasantepheap Srei Ampil, 40 kilometers from Phnom Penh... 25 people (only 5 boys, all the others are girls) move forward in the back yard of the orphanage. They all are young; no one is more than 20 years old. And they are shy. They have never met before and look each other in a mix of reserve and curiosity.

Even though they finished their study for long time from Centre for Information Systems Training but they still keep CIST in their heart and continue to remember CIST forever. On Sunday, April 10th, 2011 from 2:00 to 7:30 pm, PN Cambodia Alumni Association (PNCAA) celebrated its annual party at Center for Information System Training (CIST). The purpose of the party is to mark the Khmer New Year and to arrange a stage where our former students can share knowledge and work experiences. Especially, they can build and strengthen good and lifelong relationship among group of alumni.

Ambience is very studious in CIST-PN Cambodia. And during two years our students never stop to study. But we really try to celebrate events and to keep traditions as everybody do in the kingdom. And the Khmer New Year is an unavoidable! So our former student and CIST dormitory boys house manager, the dynamic Mr. Roeurm Channa, proposed to the director to organize, manage and animate a fantastic party for all the CIST staff and students. To respond to the need of ICT business community for quality recruitment, The Department of Computer Science of Institute of Technology of Cambodia launches the ICT Career Expo. The 2011 session was the opportunity to share experiences on ICT related topics to students and young ICT professionals. Three winners have been announced as the first to receive the country’s Indradevi Hope Awards, organised by Women’s International Group of Cambodia. On Sunday, February 20th, almost 200 Cambodian females were invited to the Award ceremony of the 1st design contest for women in Cambodia hosted by the Executive Committee on the Asian designer’s promotion. This contest is created by Ms. Wakani Nukui, President of Blooming Life (a company founded on September 2009 in Tokyo to create employment opportunities for women in Asia, especially Cambodia by providing sewing supplies and design work) and sponsored by Japanese companies like JTB Business World Tokyo Corp, Calormark Co. Ltd.

On January the 15, 2011, at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, 150 alumni participated in the general meeting. It was a pleasure to meet our former students and to have some news about them! In a friendly and happy meeting, they elected the new board: 9 alumni to be board members for two- year mandate. 450 young people run together to offer a higher education to underprivileged Cambodians!
Teenagers in the tropics… sounds like a sweet lifestyle! But this doesn’t mean laziness. Some students felt concerned about the Kingdom’s social problems and decided to commit themselves to a solidarity act. On December the 10th students from French high school Lycéefrançais René Descartes and CIST, the Cambodian school of the NGO PasserellesNumériques, will run together. A relay race with Khmer-French pairs will take place around Wat Phnom from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. A shared race with a shared objective: to offer underprivileged students a free higher education leading to a diploma in a promising and recruiting sector: Communication and Information Technologies.

On Saturday the 6th of October, it was the 2010 promotion graduation ceremony. Eighty nine students received their diplomas. It means 93% of our students succeed in their exams! In August, 12 volunteers have offered their skills, through missions from ranging from 2 weeks to two months with the support of their companies. We have developed an innovative skill-sponsorships model between Passerelles Numériques and Accenture, then with many other partners including Steria, ECS, Novell, Osiatis, Econocom… The companies guarantee the professionalism of projects and their quality and in doing so share skills and experience that builds trust and pride.

2 month full-time internship for both IT support & Software Tester (mid August-mid October)

In Cambodia, The rural areas are highly disadvantaged: 34.70% of the population is poor, and 90% of the poor are rural. 30% of kids is severely affected and half of them have delayed of growth (2/3 of young people receive only 2 meals a day). Farming mainly focused on rice field for own survival with very hard working conditions. Severe land shortage: 20% of the population has no land and 25% own less than 0.5 ha. In the countryside, there is almost no irrigation, no electricity and the access to education is dramatically low, especially for girls!

What is a worker without good tools? When young student decides to become an IT officer, he knows he is going to spend most of his time in front of PC screen. So to have a good eyesight is very important! Eye Care, the largest optical chain store in Cambodia, fells very concerned by this health problem and our mission. They decide to help us in a fantastic and solidarity act: they provide our students and former students with eyes exam and glasses …for free!

IT training can be very abstract and it’s very important to concrete it in a project to test the knowledge of the students. The objective of mini IT project, manage by Mr. Sok Vatanak, our IT DOP trainer, is to make the students DOP2010 to be master .NET framework, C#, and other client side languages. Moreover, it aims to improve the student communication and negotiation skill by working in group, and communicate with the virtual client (Mr Sok Vatanak, project tutor and supervisor).

Wednesday, two journalists from Equity programs came in CIST to film a video report about our center and our mission. They work for Equitycam, a website of Equity Programmes broadcasting on State channel TVK. This is a UNDP (United Nation Development Program & TVK initiative under the umbrella project "Strengthening Democracy and Electoral Processes in Cambodia". The guiding principle of Equity Programmes is to cover news in a fair and balanced way.

Most of our students are supported by individual donors. This French god mother or (and) god father and the student communicate by mail during all this partnership. In spite of the distance, talking about the school, the life, the exam, the daily life, they succeed in becoming very close. And sometimes, a big event happen in this relation: our students have the surprise and joy to meet these sponsors who have made the trip up to Cambodia to visit them. It was the case of Bunleang, Leakhena, Savuth and Ou Neam who received their sponsors of association APSARA Carole Louchart. They tell us this nice day of brotherhood and solidarity.

On 7 January 1979, invading Vietnamese troops seized Phnom Penh and sent the Khmer Rouge fleeing to remote jungles. Thursday, the victory over genocide day, is a day to remember, a day to try to understand, a day to explain to the next generation our past to escape this horror in the future. To commemorate it, CIST DOP students went to Toul Sleng museum. A big step back in this dark side of their history, which create emotion and comments and made the students realize what their families lived.

For its poorest countries, who are only now beginning to recover from the huge increase in the price of staple foodstuffs which had marked 2008, the IMF has declared that the crisis is directly threatening their considerable progress made during the past decade and has underlined that the protection of spending on the health, education and vital infrastructure of these countries is essential in order to avoid a humanitarian crisis.
